Dance in the rain with me

Emily and Tammy were just hanging out at Emily’s apartment. They were bored and were trying to figure out what to do. Emily asked, “let’s go get some lunch downstairs at the coffee shop.” They didn’t feel like driving anywhere, Tammy agreed , so they went down to get some sandwiches and sodas and bring them back up. When they entered the shop, Sophia, the owner, came over and gave Emily a hug and insisted, “take one of the pies upstairs for you and Tammy.” She loved her homemade pies. Both  women went to the display case and picked out the chocolate cheesecake. They ordered their sandwiches and drinks. Ten minutes later, they were carrying everything upstairs. Tammy went to go put the cheesecake in the fridge, on her way she said, ” there is nothing like Sophia’s homemade pies and cheesecakes.” Emily grinned in agreement as she took a bite of her sandwich. Tammy came in and sat down and started to eat hers too.

It started to rain hard as they were getting into a movie on Netflix. Then poof, the power went out. They both stood up and yelled, “nooooooooooo!!! right at the good part too!” Emily laughed and turned to her and asked, “well, what do we do now?” Tammy shrugged her shoulders and replied with a grin, ” there is always cheesecake and talk about boys.” They both laughed. Instead of getting plates, Emily just grabbed some forks from the drawer and Tammy grabbed the cheesecake from the fridge and went back into the living room. She set the cheesecake on the coffee table, and then went to the bookshelf and took out the yearbook. Returning to the coffee table, she says to Emily, “I forget who you had crushes on. Let’s go through and you point out who they were.” Emily agrees, but Tammy doesn’t know and has never known that their was one guy that she has always had a crush on.

Page after page, they both say who they have had crushes on back then. They both laugh at all the silly pictures of people with hairstyles that were big back then. Remembering the pep rallies, football games, dances and the plays the drama club would perform. They had good memories of those days. They would laugh at some memories so hard they had tears streaming down their cheeks. After they got through the yearbook, they fell back on the couch and just remembered silently. Those memories were making Emily think of him. She still doesn’t have the courage to confess to Tammy.

Emily is so deep in the daydream that she doesn’t hear Tammy. “Earth to Emily. Em!! Hello, come back.” She is waving her hand in front of her face trying to get her to come back down from the day dream. Emily blinks her eyes a few times and sits back up. “Oh my gosh, sorry was lost in thought there for a minute.” She is so embarrassed, she doesn’t look at Tammy, she picks up a fork and takes a bite of the cheesecake. Tammy is not gonna let this go. “Ok Em, fess up, who is it?” Emily shakes her head no, ” No, I’m not telling because you will go tell him.” Tammy gasps and gets excited, “You mean he still lives in town? ” Tammy thinks for a minute, then says, ” you don’t have to TELL me, but you can show me.” She tosses the yearbook to Emily and tells her to open to the page of who it is. At first Emily refuses to do it. Then she sits and thinks about it. All these years, the fantasy of him has lived in her head. If she tells Tammy, she is afraid that it all may come crashing down and the fantasy won’t become the reality. Slowly Emily turns to the page of her crush and sets the book in between them and just looks straight ahead. Not sure how Tammy will react. She holds her breath and Tammy picks up the book and looks at the two pages. She carefully looks at each picture. Then she looks up at Emily, “I know who it is.” Tammy closes the book and takes a sip of her soda. “Em, why didn’t you ever tell me. I am your best friend.” Emily turns to her and confesses, ” Because I am afraid that it would change things. What if he isn’t interested. What if he never thought about me that way. I just don’t want to lose him as a friend.” Tammy smiles and places her hand on her shoulder and replies, ” Emily, you won’t know until you ask him.” Emily just shakes her head.

It was still raining, but not as hard. Emily wanted to get out and walk off the cheesecake. She stood up and said, ” Lets go out in the rain. Like we did when we were kids. Lets dance in the rain and not care who sees how silly we are.” Tammy laughs and replies, ” Lets go dance in the rain.” With that, they walk out the door and into the rain. Emily just stands there and puts her head back and lets the rain fall on her face. Tammy is twirling like a ballerina and dancing to her own music. Emily joins her in twirling and dancing. Laughing and giggling like two school girls.  They are dancing and laughing out front of the coffee shop. People walk by smiling and shaking their heads. They are soaked to the bone by the time they head back upstairs. Then change into dry clothes and head downstairs.

Robert is sitting at one of the tables in the coffee shop when they both walk in. He looks up and smiles. Tammy heads over to the table, while Emily gives Sophia their order and tells them they will be sitting at Roberts table. Sophia goes and puts in the order. Emily joins them at the table. Tammy makes sure that the seat next to Robert is available. Tammy gives her a look that tells her to sit next to him. He smiles when Emily sits next to him. Emily smiles back a shy smile. Not sure what to say. They all sit in silence for a few minutes. Sophia comes over with sandwiches for Tammy and Emily. As Sophia sets down the plates, she says pointing to Emily and Robert, “you two would make a cute couple.” then walks away to wait on some customers that just walked in the door. She looks over at Robert and blushes, then starts to eat her sandwich. He laughs and continues eating his hamburger and fries. Tammy takes a deep breath, not sure if she will get in trouble with the both of them, and says, ” I agree with Sophia.” She takes a bite of her sandwich and smiles.

After eating in complete silence. When they all finish eating, Robert looks at Emily and asks, ” would you like to go out sometime? I am not seeing anyone. Are you seeing anyone?” She blushes and softly answers, “no I am not seeing anyone. I think it would be nice to go out. We can have lunch here.” Robert shakes his head, “no, I mean a real date. This place is for when we hang out as friends. I would like to take you out somewhere nice.” Tammy excuses herself and takes the plates back to the kitchen.

Robert clears his throat and is able to freely now that Tammy has left the table. “Emily, I have wanted to ask you out for a while, but wasn’t sure if you would have turned me down. When I saw you dancing in the rain, you looked so adorable, I wanted to ask you out at that moment, but wasn’t sure. But I am asking you now, will you go out with me?” He didn’t take his eyes off of her, waiting for her to answer. She cleared her throat and replied, ” Yes, I would love to go out with you. I felt the same way. I wasn’t sure that you would be interested.” They made plans to meet tomorrow night. Tammy came back to the table and they told her that they will be going on a date tomorrow night. Tammy hugged them both, and said she is going to help Sophia clean up before they close.

Emily chooses a simple and modest dress. She isn’t as nervous as she thought she would be. Maybe because she has been waiting for this for so long, it’s a relief that it it finally coming true. Something about this feels right. When Robert arrives, she opens the door with the brightest smile and it’s only for him. He smiles just as bright, and only for her.

They arrive at a quiet Italian restaurant. They sit in one of the booths. Robert asks her what she would like to have. She takes a few moments and then she chooses chicken and pasta dish. When the waiter comes back to take the order, Robert orders for both of them. Their meal arrives and they take a few bites and then talk for a bit, taking their time to enjoy the meal and each others company. Emily doesn’t want this night to end. She is having such a wonderful time with Robert.

As they leave the restaurant, Robert is walking her to the car. He stops at the passenger side door. He takes her in his arms and gives her the most sweetest softest kiss. Then he looks in her eyes and say, “I would like to go out with you again.” She looks into his eyes with such love in her heart and replies, “I would love to go out with you again. As long as you agree to dance in the rain with me.” He laughs and says, “I will dance in the rain with you.” He takes her home and sees her to the door. He gives her a kiss and says good night. She glides into her apartment and goes to her bedroom and goes to bed and drifts off reliving the night she had with Robert.
